NAGA CITY, CAMARINES SUR – In commemoration of the 32nd year of Mendiola Massacre, local groups of peasants and fishers in Bicol held protest actions today, January 22, to unify their calls for genuine land reform and demand justice for the victims of human rights violations.
Until today, no justice was delivered to the farmers, victims and survivors of Mendiola Massacre according to Jonathan Moico, deputy secretary general of Kilusang Magbubukid ng Bicol (KMB). “The worst, Duterte is doing the same, killing farmers in the region through its mercenaries,” he said.
As of January 2019, Karapatan Bicol recorded 56 extrajudicial killings (EJKs) in the region, 28 of which were farmers and fishers.
In Sorsogon City, over 800 Anakpawis members held marcha rally to call for justice to the recent brutal killing of their member and supporter.
On the morning of January 11 this year, Anakpawis active member Nicasio Ebio, 37, was shot dead by four motorcycle-riding unidentified gunmen while standing and pleading not to kill him near the village hall in Bgy. Bato, Bacon municipality. Nicasio, who was a fisherman and worker in the local sanitary landfill, has 10 gunshot wounds.
In a separate incident the following day, January 12, construction worker Hermenegildo Domdom, husband of Anakpawis active member, was shot dead by two motorcycle-riding unidentified gunmen while heading home for lunch in the road between the boundaries of Bgy. San Ramon and Bgy. Lupe in the municipality of Prieto Diaz. Hermenegildo has 14 gunshot wounds.
IN Legazpi City, 775 Albayanos joined protest action and held program in front of Albay Capitol.
While in Naga City, former Anakpawis Partylist Representative Fernando Hicap joined the 563 Bicolanos in a protest caravan. Hicap was the guest speaker for the Regional Anakpawis Congress held here, morning.
