NAGA CITY – Bicol region is already prepared for the upcoming region-wide transport strike on Monday, the day for President Rodrigo Duterte’s 2nd State of the Nation Address (SONA) according to Condor-Piston-Bicol .
” All we wanted to call upon, especially to the transport workers and commuters is to understand and participate on the strike because this is not just for us but for everyone. If they (commuters) do not have important matter to be held of , we encourage them just to stay in the house because we guarantee them that on Monday mass transportation will be paralyzed,” said Ramon Rescovilla, spokesperson of Condor-Piston-Bicol.
The transport strike is said to be a symbolic action regarding the continuous implementation of the Modernization Program nationwide. Last June 19, the DOTr together with the LTFRB released the Dept. Order 2017-011 which is the Omnibus Guidelines on the Planning and Identification of Public Road Transportation Services and Franchise Issuance.
According to Rescovilla, they strongly opposes the Modernization program because it will only affect the history of the long service provided by the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) especially the jeepneys and also the livelihood of the transport workers.
“The program is nice to hear, but the true objective is to phaseout the jeepney and other public utility vehicle”, said Joel Pillogo of Condor Piston Camarines Sur.
After the success of several strikes around the region, Condor Piston believes that through collective actions, voices of the transport sector will be heard. Last February, almost a hundred percent of transportation here in Bicol was paralized due to the transportation strike.
Marino Traballo, chairman of the board of the Libmanan Transport Service Cooperative, deeply expressed his sentiment on the issue of the modernization program.
“We will definitely join and unite because we believe in the struggle of entire transport sector, because we are aware that this modernization will just make it difficult for citizens, operators – even commuters will be affected”, said Traballo.
Marino Traballo has been a driver and operator for 20 years from now. So even for him, it is really hard for them to let the program sweep their livelihood and comply to the new requisites DOTr and LTFRB is asking. (BaretangBikolnon.com)
