CAMARINES SUR – Even the decision of President Rodrigo Duterte to cut his trip from Russia to solve crisis in Marawi was right, his declaration of Martial Law is not the solution according to Nelsy Rodriguez of BAYAN provincial chapter here.

BAYAN-Camarines Sur led a candle lightning protest yesterday late afternoon at Plaza Quince Martirez, Naga City to stand with Marawi and condemn Martial Law in Mindanao.

“We condemn the terrorist attack of Maute Group-Abu Sayaff Group in Marawi, Lanao Del Sur that victimized plenty of innocent civilians,” said Rodriguez. “We should condemn the burning of church and school by this terrorist group.”

Rodriguez added that declaring Martial Law to solve the crisis in Marawi is not the right solution since civilians from progressive groups and legitimate organizations who are fighting for free land, job access, salary increase, just rights and sovereignty will be affected.

She also stated that declaring Martial Law and suspension of Writ of Habeas Corpus will give more power to AFP and PNP for them to silence activists, abduct, arrest illegally with bogus charges whom they believe NPA members.

Rodriguez added that according to DND Chief Lorenzana, Martial Law will also be used to stop collecting revolutionary tax of red armies in Mindanao.

In history, Martial Law brought chaos according to Rodriguez. “It will only intensifies the bloody record of AFP and PNP in human rights violations,” she said.

BAYAN-CamSur demand Duterte to lift Martial Law and focus on solving the armed conflict in Mindanao through peace talks.

Meanwhile, College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) – Camarines Sur expressed solidarity with the people of Marawi and stands with BAYAN-CamSur in protest against Martial Law. CEGP chapter here encourages campus writers, youths and local citizens to join them in protest actions. (
